A Plea to Pecos Bill

Too long you've stayed in Texas, Pecos Bill,
Too long have you been silent in our land,
Though every town and village bears your brand
You keep from Oklahoma distance, still.

We know no cowboy ever matched your feats;
No kid could run in your coyote pack;
No wrangler stop the noon-sun in its track;
Chuck Norris none of your grand work repeats.

A Widow-Maker wildcat rode for thrill,
Two rattlesnakes you coiled at your hip;
One your lasso and one reluctant whip,
You rambled over desert, plain, and hill.

You calmed a stormy water with your word.
At your command you calmed both wind and wave.
Oh we remember how you came to save!
It is the story we have always heard.

So come to Oklahoma, do not fail!
Lasso this orn'ry twister near our school.
You hear our cries, our screams--please don't be cruel!
Come show you're not another fairy-tale.

You have the means, the knowledge, and the will,
Why won't you come to save us, Pecos Bill?
