Before you lived we thought we knew
the boundaries of love,
none could foresee love-ache, love-glee
that in your form would move
or guess your dancing smiles or wiles would
unguessed pleasures prove.
of fearsome trials ahead.
The teething months, the twos and threes,
thirteen's quite rough, they said.
We faced with you these moments all
and found little to dread.
Instead we three walked woods and glades
and learned the sparrow song.
We questioned, prayed, remembered, played,
we soared above the throng
and found some memes from ancient days
though dominant still, quite wrong.
This path you now must climb they warn
is crowned in stormy weather
But fear not child, our love is sure,
our hands ready as ever.
You taught us love can boundless be
and death nor life can sever.
A bright, compassionate friend we've gained,
But lost a daughter? Never!
